The manager's unfortunate time in charge comes to a close
The coach's ill-fated time at Rangers ended with the gaffer departing the Falkirk Stadium via a rear entrance and a waiting car after a 1-1 draw which left the Glasgow side a significant margin from the top of the premier division after just seven games.
Furious fans had encircled the squad transport in the stadium location, showing their discontent.
Ibrox directors hesitant to dismiss Martin
The Ibrox hierarchy had been reluctant to dismiss the former Swansea boss, who was only appointed in the summer, despite vociferous protests from supporters.
However, there was an acknowledgement that the 39-year-old’s job had become unsustainable.
The club have won only one of their league fixtures to date, which has been alongside poor performances in Europe.
In total, Martin won only five of 17 competitive matches, with a lackluster, muddled brand of football that won over few admirers.
“Even though changeovers need patience, results have fallen short of the organization's goals,” announced a Rangers statement on Sunday night.
“Number two the assistant, and first-team staff member Williamson, will also be leaving. Martin and his staff have put in tremendous effort throughout their spell. We express gratitude for their dedication and wish them well for the next chapter.”
Gerrard secured the championship with the club
Gerrard claimed the league with Rangers in 2020-21, their sole title since that year.
His achievements in the Scottish league before then, coupled with difficulties at Villa, raises questions about his managerial capabilities.
Yet he is held in high esteem by the very set of fans Rangers desperately need back on side.
The reappointment of the Anfield legend, who last managed in the Middle East, would prove hugely popular.
The coach will also be mindful of what scarce chances he has to be a manager in major divisions.
Martin’s exit will increase pressure on the sporting director
The manager's departure will increase pressure on Thelwell, the Rangers sporting director.
He had been strongly in favor of the coach while announcing a transfer outlay of a significant sum in the transfer window.
Martin had agreed to a long-term deal.
Martin's past roles
The manager, who had previously coached the League One side and the Swans, managed Southampton to promotion to the Premier League in 2024 after being brought in the previous summer.
He was let go last December after the the club won only one of their opening 16 fixtures.
He was chosen as Barry Ferguson’s successor in the summer, after the caretaker boss had replaced the dismissed Philippe Clement in February.
