Caelan Doris Secures Spot in Ireland Selection But Joe McCarthy Misses Out

Rugby team announcement news

Newly reappointed manager Andy Farrell has included captain Caelan Doris in his Irish squad for the autumn internationals, but lock McCarthy misses out.

Doris, absent from play since undergoing shoulder surgery in the start of May, recently returned to Leinster training, but it remains unclear whether he will be fit to play against the All Blacks in the US on 1 November.

Lock Joe McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after not recovering from the foot injury he sustained during the first British and Irish Lions match against the Wallabies in the summer.

Northern province forward Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province wing Nash are also absent because of injury, and number 15 Keenan was previously excluded after having a hip operation following the Lions tour.

Dublin province forward McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the only uncapped player in the 34-player squad, however Irish rugby authorities says new Munster duo Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and previously capped Connacht winger Bolton will travel to the US as "reserves".

Following playing the All Blacks at Soldier Field in a rematch of their previous meeting, the team host the Brave Blossoms, Australia and world champions the Springboks in the Irish capital.

"It's an exciting group to the panel and there's an opportunity for the more experienced players and for the newcomers on the summer tour to the Lelos and the Lobos," commented Farrell, who returns to Ireland duty after a break to coach the British and Irish Lions to the southern hemisphere.

In a largely experienced selection, Leinster's Sam Prendergast and Munster's Crowley will once again compete for the first-choice fly-half spot. The fly-half role is remains available, with the two players set to play against each other for the first time in the upcoming United Rugby Championship game at Croke Park.

Frawley is the third number 10 chosen as Farrell deciding not to calling up the province's Harry Byrne.

At number 9, Farrell has picked Lions tourist Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who captained the national side to the summer Test victories over the Lelos and the Lobos. There is also a return for the western province's Blade, who is preferred to club-mate Murphy.

Robbie Henshaw, Aki, Garry Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey represent an veteran group of centre choices. Osborne is another option in the centres, but the youngster is also a leading candidate to cover for the full-back at number 15.

Wingers Lowe, Hansen, O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are included. The winger shone on his first Ireland outings over the summer with a brace each in the victories over Georgia and Portugal.

Paddy McCarthy is the sole new name in the Ireland forwards. The front rower has been in two of Leinster's URC league matches so far and featured in the second string's defeat by England in the English city earlier this year.

The 22-year-old was included in interim boss Paul O'Connell's summer selection, yet did not earn a international appearance.

Munster lock Thomas Ahern, who earned his debut appearances in those matches, is kept in the squad, and experienced Ulster lock Henderson returns after missing the summer matches.

Jack Conan, who started all three Lions matches during the tour, is poised to cover for Doris should the captain fails to recover fitness in time to play the All Blacks.

The national team will meet in the capital on Monday before traveling to the US on the following day.
